Lithuanian Scientific Society’s support of Ukraine to become the member state of European Union

Vilnius, 2022-02-29

We, Lithuanian Science Community, appeal to you, the leaders of the European Union (EU) and the leaders of European countries, in support of HE Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky’s application to accept Ukraine as a full member of the EU.

We base this appeal on facts and evidence:

–       The citizens of Ukraine are defending their values as a democratic independent country and in turn defends Europe against its aggressor – Russia under Putin’s rule. Russia has invaded Ukraine by breaking the international law and threatening the global security;

–       Ukrainian citizens have shown resistance and determination to be a democratic equal member of EU by sacrificing their lives to become a ;

–       The Europe’s democratic future is being decided, so not only is it important for Ukraine to become a full member of the EU, but the EU itself will be significantly strengthened when Ukraine becomes a member. Europe has no right to miss the historic opportunity to expand the community of democracies and fundamentally strengthen the geopolitical balance.

–       The citizens of Lithuania, have a long-standing collective memory of numerous Russian occupations, most recently Soviet oppression, thus we understand the danger of imperialist predatory aspirations Russian government has, which are not changing;

–       Its imperative to understand, that if the Ukraine will not be accepted to become the member of the EU in the coming days, it might be impossible to do so later, and the country could become a satellite of Putin-controlled Russia. The organizers of bloody aggression would become even more arrogant, jeopardizing democratic development throughout Europe.

–       We are convinced that the accession of Ukraine to the EU would significantly strengthen Europe’s cultural, economic and geopolitical powers.
